Sandbar with Cathy Church

Today I connected with the famous underwater photographer and teacher, Cathy Church, for a businessman's holiday day. We took Friday morning early (as in 5:45 am) and headed out to Sandbar, in the North Sound, to shoot the southern stingrays that gather there. Sandbar, since I first dived it, has been one of my favorite underwater experiences on Grand Cayman. Just as the sun rises, the rays gather in a school and circle in groups of 20-40 rays. You wait until they come your way, settle on the sand, and shoot in awe as the entire group swoops over your head, all around you, and then they circle back and do it again. I could stay in the water all day for this. And have in the past.  We spent about 2 hours in the water, while I shot the rays from every angle I could think of. There’s nothing quite like time and access.  Thanks a ton to Cathy Church for taking me out. Check out her website at cathychurch.com.

First Day

Sunday morning the entire group gathered at My Bar. Almost every single person in attendance has been to a Total Sub before, which says a lot about the kind of event that Theresa Gulledge and the PADI Diving Society have put on now for 10 years. Yes, it’s the 10th anniversary of Total Sub and with so many friends it's gonna be a great week.

Second Day

On the boat with Team White and we got to dive Ghost Mountain, perhaps my favorite site on Cayman. This pinnacle rises up like a ghost from the blue and is covered in sponges and gorgonians and corals so pristine you feel like you’re the first diver to discover it.  It’s a current dependent site, but we catch it on a current free day. A hawksbill turtle even comes in at the end of the dive to keep us all company. Awesome day. Tonight we party like pirates (and wear the costumes, too). Arggg.
