    Default Definition of Expat

Although I enjoyed the article Move to Paradise in the June 2008 edition - hey, I work as an editor so it's my job to annoy. You list among you "top picks to go expat" the island of Maui. I believe that "go expat" one must leave the country of one's citizenship so, at least for your American readers, Maui wouldn't quality as an "expat" destination - unless Hawai'i has left the union?

Default Maui: still part of Hawai'i

Yes, Butch, you are correct. Maui is still part of the country, which is why Ty in his text mentioned that moving to Maui isn't truly becoming an expat. But, this is a move that for many would be considered a big, life-changing step and thus can be likened to an international relocation.

    Thanks for writing,
