I have gone diving in Belize, Anguilla and before I became certified I experienced a very small dive in cozumel. My wife is pregnant, and I would like to get a quick dive trip in before the baby arrives, as it may be a while before I'm able to get away again. I'd like to stay in the carribean, and was considering The caymans, cozumel or the Bahamas . They all look great and sound great based on the articles in Sport Diver. Can anyone there give me an oppinion on which to choose ? My budjet is not unlimited, I dont care much for swarms of people, but at the same time dont want such isolation that diving will be my only activity available. And the time of year would be january. Can you give any info to help me make this a memorable trip. Anguilla was not, but I really enjoyed Belize

Check into Andros Island, Bahamas. I went there a few years ago- a great, uncrowded destination.

just got back from cozumel, there are a lot of dive shops that want to take you out on there boats, but there are also some great shore dives that seemed to be kept on the down low. Found some great reefs and some caves that had very easy access.

I have not been to the Bahamas, but I know the others. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are great dive locations, but there is not nearly as much to do otherwise (which is what I like myself). Grand Cayman has a lot of great non-diving activities. The problem there is the cost of living is very high; you will not believe the prioe of meals alone. The west end is where most people stay, and that is where most of the popular dive sites are. However, the east end has spectacular dives, and I would recommend it if you are comfortable with deeper first dives and slightly rougher surface conditions. Cozumel has many outstanding sites, more reasonable prices, and some really interesting sites to visit if you get past the usual tourist traps. All the dive sites are easy to get to from nearly any starting point. In many cases, you get on the boat and head out to sea, determining your destination by consensus. If you want to be sure of a particular profile, you may want to look around for an operator who can assure you what you want.
