I'm going to the Outer Banks with my family and my dive buddy's family. He and I are the only ones that dive and only got our OW cert in October 2003. Can anyone tell me about the diving in the Outer Banks, things like do we need wet suits, is there diving at our certified depth, what will we see, any special precautions, and recommendations for dive shops that rent some gear. Thanks

You can dive the U85 at about 90-100 feet or any number of other wrecks depending on whether you are going to the northern or southern coast of NC. You will need a wetsuit as water temperatures can vary greatly from day to day due to the confluence of the Gulf Stream and the Labrador currents.

There are some wrecks off the Beaufort/Morehead City area that are about 60-80 feet (rough guess without looking at my dive log). Check out the Caribe Sea, the Papoose and the Indra. My favorite dive operator in NC is Discovery Diving out of Beaufort (www.discoverydiving.com). Be prepared for a long, choppy boat ride but well worth it to see the sand tiger sharks! Happy Diving!
